The Edwards Audio Apprentice MC phono stage is derived from the popular Edwards Audio (Talk Electronics) MM1 and uses a similar circuit topology with passive treble and active bass equalization.
Unusually at this price level it uses a second stage amplifier to buffer the equalization network and ensure a low output impedance, whilst the MC gain uses a third separate op-amp.
This version has internal linear power supply with mains transformer. A figure of eight power cable is provided. It is completed with a stylish 3mm black acrylic front panel and a 5mm machined aluminium frame. MM or MC selection is via a panel switch. Front panel LEDs indicate the selected MM or MC mode.
As far as the all important sonic performance is concerned, with its near silent noise floor and 42dB gain in MM mode or 63dB gain in MC mode the Apprentice MC will not leave you disappointed, unlike most we have listened to. Given the price, this makes it a true audiophile bargain.
